Job Description

SUMMARY

Responsible for analyzing, recommending, building, and supporting database management systems required by the company to meet its business objectives; developing and maintaining backup and disaster recovery procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITES

  • Assists and mentors Database Administrator I on any database(s) activities.
  • Assists Database Administrators III and Project Leads in other activities as needed related to the design, development and implementation of any database server products and projects.

  • Database Platform Development 5-10%

  • Monitor and analyze the database requirements of the organization and provide feedback
  • Takes initiative in improving operational procedures
  • Maintain currency of computer hardware and software capabilities related to the databases through research/education/self-motivated training and personal development. Stays abreast of industry direction and trends in database, database tools, database extraction methods and data warehousing theories and applications.
  • Participate during capacity planning and provide technical expertise;

  • Database Project Work 5-10%

  • Assists Project Leads in other activities as needed related to the design, development and implementation of Database(s) products and projects.
  • Confers with others to determine impact of any database(s) changes on other systems and processes. Communicates with affected departments and users any changes to database structure and the database(s) function or service.
  • Assists in software and hardware installs, upgrades and migrations.

  • Database Maintenance and Administration 30-40%

  • Develop and implement data administration policy, standards and models
  • Coordinates with other IT departments and the database team to ensure implementation and monitoring of databases and system integration. Executes, schedules and monitors database maintenance; Develops and updates database configuration documentation.
  • Communicating regularly with technical, applications and operational staff to ensure database integrity and security;
  • Updates and maintains database dictionaries and tables in the data marts as required.
  • Performs backup of all databases and files and performs restores as necessary. Develops, manages and test backup and recovery plans;
  • Ensures that storage, archiving, backup and recovery procedures are functioning correctly;
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures for database(s) access and usage and for the backup and recovery of data
  • Monitor and maximize the performance and availability of database systems. Monitors database performance, space, and transaction log sizes to ensure productivity and uptime. Tune for growth as necessary.
  • Ensure licensing of all database systems is appropriate and complete
  • Ensure that all technical documentation is kept up-to-date and to agreed standards. Keep user and system documentation for these systems up-to-date and provide regular and frequent training and support to users and colleagues
  • Ensure housekeeping procedures are developed and adhered to

  • Database Support 30-40%

  • Validates the integrity and quality of data and databases provided to end-user.
  • Creates and maintains catalogs (including filters and joins).
  • Identifies data sources, constructs data decomposition diagrams, provides data flow diagrams and documents the process.
  • Writes codes for database access, modifications, and constructions including stored procedures, DTS and SSIS.
  • Performs Extract and Load activities to keep the DWH in a current state.
  • Investigates and resolves any database(s) related problems, questions, and concerns. Maintains appropriate logs of database(s) related problems and modifications.
  • Troubleshoots full spectrum of database issues; solves root issue after treating symptom; Resolves database performance, capacity, integrity, quality, replication, and other distributed data issues.
  • Monitoring performance and managing parameters to provide fast query responses to 'front end' users;
  • Interfaces effectively and independently with third party support groups
  • Performs data migrations as required by the business

  • Other duties

  • Ensures that personally completed deployments entering production are sound, and built following internal and industry standards. Develops personal plans and milestones appropriate for completion of all work assignments
  • This position requires caring a pager for 1 week with a frequency of X weeks, depending of the number of active database staff members. This position requires overtime/after hours work on occasion.

REQUIREMENTS

BS in Computer Science or BA with equivalent technical competency.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

  • Minimum of 4-6 years database analyst and/or database administrator experience developing decision support systems, building data warehouses, and developing reports and reporting tools.
  • Must have direct client interaction, good communication and excellent analytical and technical skills, and be skilled at using MS Office Professional, MS Project and Visio.
  • Knowledge of Windows 2000, SQL 2000, relational database and data warehouse methodologies is essential.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge of resilient database implementations (clusters, mirrors, replicas).
  • Must be able to write scripts, stored procedures, and DTS.
  • Able to focus on complex issues within a busy environment and pay close attention to details
  • Cognos Impromptu and PowerPlay experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of Visual Basic and Active X desired.
